Indigenous advocate Warren Mundine says he is not opposed to the Māori Party’s push to change the name of New Zealand to Aotearoa, which has been “very popular” for quite a while.
“I’m not surprised that party called the Māori Party wants to revert back to the Māori name that they use for New Zealand,” he told Sky News host Paul Murray.
“It’s been very popular around for quite a while, in fact some businesses, some people actually use both names, New Zealand and Aotearoa.
“I don’t actually mind the name … and it’s doing it the right way, they’ve got a petition, we’ll see how it goes through.
“I don’t mind the idea of having the original names of places … that’s a great idea.”
