EXCLUSIVE: Young Royals star Malte Gardinger has signed for representation with United Agents in the UK, as the Netflix show nears its final return next month.

Gardinger quietly signed last year, following two seasons of Young Royals, in which he plays Årnäs, a member of a noble family, second cousin of Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) and school prefect.

The third and final season of Young Royals, which Nexiko makes for Netflix Sweden, is set to launch on March 11 globally. The show stars Ryding as the fictional Crown Prince of Sweden, who begins a romance with fellow student Simon Eriksson (Omar Rudberg). Lisa Ambjörn, Lars Beckung and Camilla Holter are the co-creators.

The show has been lauded for its portrayal of teenagers and is Netflix Sweden’s most-watched original series. It also made the top 10 in several other countries. In 2022, it won Best Youth Drama and Show of the Year at Kristallen Awards, the official Swedish television awards. Watch a trailer for the final run below.

Speaking to Deadline ahead of the Season 3 launch, Gardinger said: “Three seasons is good amount for the story. I’m glad were not milking it just because it’s successful. It’s sad to leave everyone who have become a family to me but I think we will still remain pretty good friends in real life.”

The Rojda Sekersöz-directed series is notable for its dedicated and active fanbase, who have filled social media apps with memes and theories about the characters.

Gardinger said he was “very grateful” for the audience, and added: “I don’t think I [originally] understood how important it could be for people. It’s such a joy to hear and read all these people who have felt an impact in a real way. It’s amazing to say you’ve been a part of making that impact.”

In an interview with Deadline in December, writer and showrunner Ambjörn talked about how it had been “such a privilege to see how the fandom has grown,” but acknowledged the pressures attached to interacting directly with the audience.

Gardinger’s experience has been similar. “I haven’t gotten used to that interaction,” he said. “Three years later it is still strange. In the beginning, I had lot of the same challenges Lisa has talked about. I found it hard and overwhelming to keep engaging, but you really want to, because you create this bond. I’m pretty low key and try to stay away from social media as much as possible, but I still read the comments and theories of the show and it’s very heart warming.”

The actor, whose parents are television presenter and host Pontus Gårdinger and actress and production designer Karin Myrenberg, made his film debut in Swedish family favourite The Anderssons Rock the Mountains, at the age of 14.

In 2016, he starred in short film #Will, written and directed by Per Sundström, about cyberbullying and mental health, was critically acclaimed, winning several awards. For his titular role of Will, he won the Rising Star Award at the Västeras Film Festival.
